Do they still make and process 8mm video film?

I was cleaning out a couple closets for my grandmother today and I found this neat old camera. She was telling me my grandpa bought it a long time ago and the brand was top notch back then. The instruction manual was there and it said that it too 8mm-16 color or black and white film. The label on the camera only said 8mm though, I’m not sure if the 16 was maybe the catalogue number (like with photo film 35mm is 135).
I thought this thing was pretty awesome and I was wondering if there is any way to get film for it and get it processed.

The other answer was completely wrong. You CAN get Regular 8mm movie film (sometimes also called “Double-Run 8″). I don’t know what kind of camera you have, but if it says that it uses 8mm film and it looks like it uses spools then it uses Regular 8mm film.

You can order 8mm film, and YES you can get it developed. I’d recommend Dwayne’s Photo in Parsons, Kansas or Spectra Film and Video in Hollywood, California.

There are a lot of other labs that can develop 8mm movie film though. Just do a search on Google.

Regular 8mm movie film is also called “Double Run 8″ because it’s actually 16mm wide and 25 feet long, and you run it through the camera twice. You shoot on one edge of the film and then when you reach the end of the roll, you flip the spools over and shoot on the other edge. When you send it to the lab to have it developed, they split the film down the middle and splice both ends together into a 50 foot roll which can be run on an 8mm projector.

The other answer was completely WRONG because 8mm movie film is in fact still made right now. I have a big collection of 8mm movie cameras and I actually still film with them sometimes as a hobby. I just bought a couple of rolls of 8mm film a month ago.

Video is an electronic medium, dependent on the transfer of electronic signals. Video signals are in constant movement, circulating between camera and monitor. This process of simultaneous production and reproduction makes video the most reflexive of media, distinct from both photography and film (in which the image or a sequence of images is central). Because it is processual and not bound to recording and the appearance of a "frame," video shares properties with the computer. In this book, Yvonne Spielmann argues that video is not merely an intermediate stage between analog and digital but a medium in its own right. Video has metamorphosed from technology to medium, with a set of aesthetic languages that are specific to it, and current critical debates on new media still need to recognize this.
