Dark Photography Art

Which brand, Nikon or Olympus?? Urgent help needed pls?
My brother insists I buy a Nikon dslr, but even at entry level I can only afford second-hand. I have found an Olympus E420 new that I can afford but I need to snap it up soon and he's not answering his phone. Help!! I don't even know whether Olympus cameras are generally OK!!! He told me to avoid Sony but apart from that I'm in the Dark. I want to use the camera for beginners Art Photography so want to be able to do portraiture/close-ups as well as landscapes etc.
To be honest it's never about what camera you have, but actually about how you use it. A camera from before the second world war is still perfectly useable today (in fact I have two). Sometimes it is more convenient to use a DSLR granted, but the game is exactly the same.
FourThirds have an immediate drawback compared to Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sigma, and Sony because their sensors are considerably smaller. Bear in mind that you don't change manufacturers as easily with system cameras, because everything has to be changed when you change systems. So it's important to try and get the right system from the outset, even if you have to buy used.
Remember DSLRs are pretty tough and have a long lifespan. Even a D70s or a Canon 20D is perfectly useable today, and you shouldn't be discouraged from buying advanced SLRs such as these!
Finally if your brother shoots Nikon, you have more to benefit if you also shoot Nikon, because you will be able to borrow and swap equipment. Something that's impossible to do cross systems.
