Homemade Photography Studio Lighting

help with homemade photostudio?
i am setting up a homemade studio, just to start practicing with my portraits. (Im just getting into photography, about a year now). i have tips on how to set up, my question is should i use a dark or light backdrop and what about the lights...im worried since i dont have the proper lights i might have unwanted shadows all over my pictures...how can i avoid this? i read something about a reflector but i dont know how to set everything up...some advice please!! also if you could give me alot of tips PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE email me, i can use all the tips i can get!!! sunfl0werrr@yahoo.com.
