People Photography Workshops

people photography workshops
Should I do the photography workshop? Will I learn a lot for what it's worth?

There is a relatively known photographer that has set up this workshop for me and 3 other people. Here are details about the workshop: We will work through 4 Modules in the two Saturdays. The first Saturday we will go over Camera Handling and Exposure, These two Modules are the foundations and we will spend whatever time we need until each of you understand and the second Saturday we will cover Composition and Flash Photography. He's charging $80 for all of it. The classes last from 9am-12. Is that pretty much what Photography Classes are worth? Am I getting a good deal? Or am I getting jipped? He is county recognized as I met him at a yearly photog exhibition where he was giving free workshops. He also mostly does children photgraphy and my ultimate goal for photography (as it's good to set goals) would be to photograph at least a couple things for National Geographic magazine. I know you may laugh or say whatever but hey, "aim high, land high"

Yes, That is a fair price and you will learn a lot if you pay attention. I teach classes like this for my town and charge basically the same amount. My class is very basic. It is designed for beginners to get a feeling for the camera and a basic understanding of photographic principles. My goal is to get the students to be able to competently use their camera in manual mode for a variety of subjects.

This is what I cover.

Day one:

Become familiar with the cameras menus and what all the various buttons and wheels do.

Define ISO, Aperture, shutter speed and how they relate to each other. I use old manual film cameras to show this. The reason is you can open up the back and see the shutter move. The old lenses have manual aperture control so you can actually see how the aperture works. Unlike a modern lens where the aperture is controlled electronically.

The I explain how the internal light meter works. I have the students put the camera in manual mode. Then change settings to see how the light meter moves.

We then do various experiments to show how shutter speed and aperture effect the photo.

I give the students a simple assignment to take some pictures using the manual mode that we will critique at the next class.

Day two:

Recap day one and answer questions. The I will critique their photos from the assignment of day one. We then discuss shooting situations. We discuss how to shoot portraits, sports, landscapes etc.

We then discuss lenses and other equipment. What they are used for and why we use them. I usually have each of the students try my camera with different lenses so they can see what they do. I will also give lens recommendations.

Day three:

Recap and answer questions. Then we usually take a field trip. We just walk around town taking pictures. I am there to help out and answer questions.

I have handouts that I give the students at the end of class that cover all we talked about.

I do not cover flash photography or anything else in detail. My goal is to get the students to understand manual exposure. If you can't do that then all other things are useless. I only cover other subjects in more advanced classes.
