How to light a product shoot with a pure white background?
How many lights do you really need for medium sized product photography? Do you HAVE to use constants or can you use strobes? I have 2 elinchroms and am purchasing another (strobes) i'd prefer to just use those, as they are producing great results we are only getting a small portion of the back of the image small fade to grey very very light hardly noticeable, but we want to get pure white backgrounds so we don't have to edit it out for 100's of product photos when we do them.
Do we build a full diffuser box to cover the area? We have a WHITE ROLL of backdrop paper like 5 ft wide... so thats covered..
Honestly, the best way to do it is to use a light table. Something where the base is made of white milk plex and then put a strobe under the table and light from below. I always prefer the use of strobes, you can achieve a much greater depth of field because of their relatively high output, which is vital when you're doing any sort of catalog work. I then light from above and behind using a large soft box (this is where having something like a 2400WS head comes in handy) and light the front using a bounce card. This gives you the best wash in the background without over exposing. If you over expose your whites too much they will make your whole image go gray - usually if you are more than 2 stops too hot you'll get squirrely color and even a lens flare that covers most of your frame.
