A Horse Sense Of Art
Getting a horse to pose is impossibility for most people. Only one person can do it, and she is the lady equestrian photographer from Pasadena, California, whose works are displayed in many celebrity homes. Who would have guessed that a girl who borrowed her first camera from Pasadena City College (PCC) would later earn fame for trackside photos, including the Montreal Olympics and British Princess Anne. For pragmatic reasons, she practiced for her photography class at PCC, after graduating from Pasadena High School, on horses. The Eaton Canyon Riding Stables were like a second home to her since she was 10 years old. With the loaned camera she snapped local horses on weekends as homework for her class. Her concentration was pulled to photography once her first photo sold, and she left behind music, art, and journalism.
At a horse show in Santa Barbara she was hired as assistant to two famous equestrian photographers with whom she travelled all over the country for two years, bringing horses in focus at shows, tracks and state fairs. Next, she was apprenticed under a different photographer pair, whose work focused on California events. Nowadays, she works with her Swedish camera with German lens and lets her mother take care of business.
Her subjects are most often caught in their more active moments, like clearing a 6- foot hurdle or nosing out their place and show rivals. But her formal photos, of horses bent down on all fours, are also a source of pride. Some horses are born to be models. They perk their ears or raise their heads once they realize a camera is trained on them. Others are downright bored and blast. When it comes to taking a good horse photo, a few pointers will help. For example, the perfect pose for hunters and jumpers would be mid-air with their legs bent and at a good angle. The best shots of Tennessee walkers are with their front hoofs in action and an over reaching hoof with their hind legs. The best angle for a stock horse is stopping in a slide, and for the saddle horse with head and legs held high. A photo of the Peruvian Paso, an endangered South American species that aficionados are struggling to save, is one of her best known works. As their forelegs roll toward the outside, take their picture. With their riders in traditional white ponchos and their elaborate bridles and saddles, the Paso is a photographer's pet.
She has found photography a good way to meet celebrity horse enthusiasts. Photography has enabled her to talk to people of royalty. At the Montreal Olympics she was able to photograph Princess Anne, which brought her to the side of the Queen. She asked Queen Elizabeth if it made her anxious to see her daughter taking high jumps, and the Queen answered in the affirmative. She added fork lifts to her repertoire to break the monotony of her usual subject, even though she also swims, back packs, bicycles, pans for gold and sometimes even rides a horse.
