Looking for advice on best photo editing software/file management tips for Mac?

I have an iMac and iPhoto at the moment, and I have just bought a Panasonic Lumix FX45 camera to learn a lot more about photography this year. What do people reckon is the best software out there for ease of managing photos and files, whilst also being good for beginners learning how to add effetcs, play around with pics?

For a mac user you're probably going to be split between Aperture and Lightroom as fee paying catalogs. They're both well designed, though I think the lean is in favour of Lightroom as it's based around the familiar Adobe Camera RAW processor. For free you could also get Picasa, though I've not personally used this.

Elements is more for image manipulation, it's not a catalog, it really takes the core features of Photoshop and presents it as a consumer product. If you're exploring into the field of serious image manipulation and don't want to pay for the full price Photoshop CS5 then you may find that GIMP (which is free) actually does more than what Elements does, and only omits a small amount of what CS5 has.
