What are my chances in this career?
I am a 16 girl and live in York, PA and I want nothing more than to work in Pittsburgh, PA as a sports writer for either a newspaper in Pittsburgh or primarily for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Steelers, or Pirates. (Preferably the Penguins, I LOVE HOCKEY!) What are my chances at these careers?
For experience I just completed my sophomore year of high school and was a sports writer for my school newspaper. I was also chosen by my journalism teacher as the sports columnist for my junior year and before my senior year I am going to apply for sports editor. Also this coming fall I have a student internship with ESPN. I am also going to see if I can get a student internship with the Hershey Bears since I am a fan of them and they're my local hockey team.
I am planning on going to Point Park University, which is in downtown Pittsburgh to major in journalism and minor in photography or broadcast journalism.
broadcast jounalism is the best way...newspapers are soon to be obselete.But reporting on sports events would be the way to go.
I would also take drama,speech in hs and college. It helps you to be comfortable talking in front of people. There are alot of women journalist breaking into the business now.And not all of them are retired players. The internship with ESPN is a great foot in the door !. That can lead to a job during and after you receive your college degree.
Unless your going to be a photographer,I wouldn't minor in it. Good luck! Hope to see you reporting in the future!
