a definition of LINE in photography?

what is a good detailed deffinition of : LINE

(in photography asspects)

I think of 'line' as a regular pattern that joins together a number of elements of the image. That line doesn't have to be straight - and the strongest images often include lines that are curved.

The power of the line comes in its ability to capture the eye and direct how it scans through an image. The nature of the curve is important - a line curving into the image is always stronger than a line that curves out of the image.

One of my favorite photographers, Ernestine Ruben, likes to explain it in terms of a rabbit in a carrot patch (she used to be an elementary school art teacher). The rabbit goes into the carrot patch, and walks around nibbling on the carrots. We can follow the path that the rabbit takes by following the line that he traces. As long as the rabbit remains within the carrot patch, that line tells us a story about the rabbit in the carrot patch. But if the line goes outside the carrot patch, then the story of the rabbit comes to an end.

The same is true of a picture - the eye will tend to follow lines, and if the curvature of the line keeps the eye within the image, then the image will capture our attention better than if the curvature of the line causes the eye to leave the image and be distracted by external graphic elements.
