Photography Metering

What exactly is metering in regards to photography?

I start taking a photography class/workshop in a few months and I'm trying to find out more about metering.

I keep hearing about metering and fill flash and I'm trying to get a better understanding.

Thanks for any advice you may have for a novice.

Metering has to do with measuring the available light so the camera knows what shutter speed and aperture size to use. Fill flash is where you use flash to light up your subject when it is back lit or has shadows on it. You've seen those pics where someone has a window behind them and they end up just a silhouette. That's the pic that needed a fill flash.
