Some owners think their horse is the best in the world, according to an artist from Walla Walla. Owners don't care if their horses place or not. One artist, from a ranch on Springdale Road, has developed a successful business model based on the rider steed relationship. She has developed both her painting and photographing skills, and has been paid for both. Whereas the bulk of her experience has been with horse lovers' pets, she has also made renditions of famous horses, like a famous actor's championship endurance mount, Shur Raff Zi. She enjoys her work, even if it is work. Horses have been a favorite subject of hers since she became a teen. She started developing her craft in sketching at the age of 11. These experiences gave her a knack for shading that gives all her horse portraits depth. Each horse presents a unique challenge, which she scrambles with on canvas.
A commissioned paintings begins with a photograph. Unless you count quick notes, she never sketches on site. She says she has encountered really finicky horse owners. They will express preference for a particular angle or request highlighting a certain characteristic.
Many dedicated owners know everything about their pets, from facial expressions to cowlicks, which makes them better experts than artists who have seen the animals for the first time. It isn't about getting the best shot of their horses, as much as it is about getting the reality of what their horses look like. She says action pictures are so much different that she has to learn the trick to capture a horse in motion. Some angles of a horse cantering are unflattering. A telephoto lens can make any horse in action look good. She did as many as 15 18 shows every year when making the horse show rounds.
She could practice both skills at some shows, where she would photograph winners and turn them into paintings. Full time horse show work may require instant picture development, which some photographers take care of with dark rooms in their vans. Unlike them, she does all her developing in her dark room at home.
Family pets of all kinds are also part of her portfolio. Because she lacks experience with dogs and cats, she needs a good picture or a meeting in person.
Her experience makes her ill equipped to paint from imagination.
