How to connect a DSLR camera to a softbox & umbrella lighting?
i know very little about photography. do you need gadgets for this?
It depends on whether the lighting if flash or continuous. If it's continuous, then the lights are plugged into the mains and you take a picture, metering for the ambient light as usual.
If it's flash, then the lights are either mains powered or battery powered. The flash is triggered either by a wire from the camera (called a PC sync cord) which goes directly from a socket on the camera to the flash, or wirelessly by an optical or radio trigger. The optical trigger can be the camera's in built flash - most studio flashes have an optical 'slave' mode, so they will flash when they 'see' the camera's built in flash fire. Radio triggers have a transmitter which sits on the hotshoe of the camera and a receiver is plugged into the studio flash - a radio signal makes the flash fire when the camera takes a picture.
I use RF602 radio triggers (about £25 a set) - good range & very reliable. Work fine with both studio flashes or small battery operated flashes.
