What camera should I get? P100 or D3000?

Hi!

I'm thinking of getting a new camera. My old one was a Nikon L20 Point & Shoot, the lens became dented after a fall. The Nikon took terrible blurry pictures with gray undertone and I am thinking of learning photography, so I wanted to upgrade.

I realise the P100 is a semi-pro and the D3000 is a DSLR. I'm so confused. Cons of the DSLR are expensive equipment, bulkiness and there's no video mode. Yet it has great photo quality and the ability of "blurry background" (yes I'm not a professional, fairly amateur). P100 has 1080p video and a huge zoom but I've heard the image quality isn't "there".

I want DSLR quality but not a DSLR??? Is that possible?
If there are any other superzoom semi pro cameras around this price range please tell me!

The P100 is NOT a semi-pro body, and truthfully neither is the D3000. Semipro bodies are ones like the D7000 @ $1,000+. The P100 is a bridge camera.

The blurry background you mentioned is the result of a large aperture. It's dependent on the lens itself, not the camera body.

If you want a DSLR image without the bulk of the equipment, then you should look at mirrorless systems. The Sony NEX-5 is a popular camera.

If you want a DSLR image without the cost of the equipment, then you're simply out of luck. "Superzoom" bridge cameras have crap image quality, esp compared to a DSLR.
