Ways To Work With A Graphic Designer
You're a small business proprietor and wish to rent a designer to create a logo. Or a website. Or a postcard. Or an insert-your-own-inventive-project-here.
Earlier than you get started, take a look at this insider's guide chock-full of useful tricks to make your first experience working with a graphic designer a constructive one.
Do... keep an open mind.
99.9% of things {that a} designer does are for a selected reason. Fonts have a distinct personality. Colors convey emotion. And as much as you want pink polka dots, they're in all probability not acceptable to your insurance enterprise brochure. Let go of your private biases and trust your designer - they're the expert and that's why you hired them. You wouldn't inform your plumber how you can install a bathroom, would you?
Don't... assume. As they are saying, it makes an ass of you and me.
Clients tend to use phrases like "fast" or "easy" or "straightforward" to describe tasks that find yourself taking an entire week (or month!) to complete. Yes, technically redrawing a logo takes lower than an hour. But what you are forgetting about are the handfuls of hours spent brainstorming and sketching tough drafts before a designer ever presents the first concept. Before you assume {that a} project will only take a few minutes - or value only a few bucks - ask your designer for a tough estimate and timeline, together with a reasonable variety of revisions. It's better to have that data upfront than to encounter an unexpectedly excessive bill or a missed deadline on the end.
Do... use visible examples to avoid communication failure.
Your idea of "clear and modern" perhaps be pretty far off from what your designer thinks of as "clear and modern." Keep away from this communication breakdown and use visible examples every time possible. Your designer is not going to repeat those website examples that you simply emailed over, but they may give him/her a better idea of what you actually imply by "make the social media icons distinguished, but not overbearing." In spite of everything, a picture is value a thousand words, right?
Don't... use cliché catchphrases.
Avoid using phrases like "make it pop" and "take it to the following degree" and "comparable however different." I know they sound like cool advertising buzz phrases, but they're really fairly vague and useless sayings. As a substitute, be specific and, per the purpose above, use visual examples each time possible.
Do... be ready and get organized.
You just despatched an e-mail to your designer asking for a couple packaging choices for your latest product. However did you remember to say the scale of the field? What about a checklist of the stores where it's going to be sold? And did you ship over the UPC code that should go on the back? Do your self a favor and get all of this data together upfront. In any other case, your designer will probably be hounding you for it later.
Don't... make changes. One. At. A. Time.
Collect your ideas, get the suggestions of your crew and THEN send the concept again to the designer for changes. It's manner simpler (and less expensive) to make adjustments in large batches than to take a piecemeal approach.
